This is one of the first projects that really forced me to consider how the form and content interacted. The content of the book had to make sense when folded as well as when laid out flat on a table. I chose to make several puns about guitars by monotype printing little monsters on to different sections of a transfer print of my guitar. I then used paint and ink for the monster's eyes and written puns.

Above is the edition of blind contour drawings we did in preparation for the final painting. For this painting we made several blind contour drawings in order to pick out a feature of our faces to accentuate. The feature that stood out the most for me was my smirk so I decided to keep them very pale in order to strike a balance between the face and shirt. It also provided a nice bit of contrast and emphasis on the lips in comparison to the rest of the face. The painting style I used for this piece was completely experimental and I utilized several different techniques while working. The hair was applied with a palette knife whereas the rest of the painting was done with dry brushing and an interesting attempt at watercoloring with acrylics. For our critiques of this painting we were told to choose a song that we felt related to us and or our paintings to play while we presented our finished works. The songs I chose were Toxic- Britney Spears, which was in relation to the painting itself and Teen Idle- Marina & the Diamonds which was in relation to myself as a person. The painting as a whole made me think of the snippets in Toxic that were grabbed from an Indian soap opera and the color palette is also reminiscent of hazardous waste. I personally relate to Teen Idle because my aesthetic is very strongly the exact brand of emo/goth pop that, that particular song oozes.
For the temperature painting we were instructed to show areas of light on the still life with a warm color (like red) and areas in shadow as cool colors (like blue). The goal was to further our understanding of utilizing different colors rather than black and white to show shadows and light.
This was our final outside of class drawing, for which we were required to focus on one of our favorite techniques we had learned throughout the semester. I chose to focus on blind contour drawing because it was one of the most enjoyable and difficult processes for me. I did several drawings of my (at the time) girlfriend's hands overlapping using varying weights of pencils and crosshatching to fill in the negative space around the hands.
This was our final in class drawing for which we were given a mostly cardboard and tape still life that then had an image of abstract shapes projected on top of it. The process of this drawing involved covering the entire sheet with black charcoal and "drawing" with a kneaded eraser and white charcoal or chalk. It was difficult to capture the dimensions of the objects in the still life with the art projected on top of it but I feel like this is a pretty successful attempt.
For this drawing we were required to completely use up an entire number two pencil, eraser and all, without making an image representative of anything specific. We focused heavily on varying line weights, stippling, use of negative space, and utilizing shading in order to show mass and depth.
Solvent Transfer Montages on the Taoist Theme of Wu Xing and in the Style of Robert Rauschenberg4/6/2016
For this project we made our own Cirtisolv transfer prints in the style of Robert Rauschenberg and using influences from the theme of Wu Xing. The images used in the transfer are each related to a specific part of the five elements of Wu Xing; wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The words associated to the elements I used in my prints are; Jupiter, scaly, sweat, scorched, saliva, middle finger, large intestine, nose, fear, and salty. This project was somewhat difficult for me since collage really isn't my strong point. It's definitely something I hope to improve on in the future since I love the results so much. I was very excited when I drew Roy Lichtenstein's name because he has been one of my favorite artists since I was in middle school. Lichtenstein works using a very illustrative method of painting and printing that makes most of his pieces seem like they were cut from a comic book, which I love. To start the painting I drew out a sketch of my section of the painting using a simple grid. Then I began painting and trying my hardest to do Lichtenstein some justice. I'm fairly happy with the end result (despite that the photograph on here makes it look kind of awful), I just wish I would have had more time to do the signature dots across the painting. My painting will be put together with 8 other students’ paintings to create the entire Vanitas painting. The finished painting (that really looks much better in person).
The themes that inspired this bra are “power” and “change”, and I decided to represent these themes through the LGBTQA+ movement. There is a lot of strength required to power thorough the hardships on the road to chance regarding equal rights to members of the LGBTQA+ community. I chose to mostly cover my bra in rainbow colors to show that there have been great strides of progress in society today regarding the acceptance of the gay community, but there is still much room for improvement. On the straps are foam beads color coded to resemble the other pride flags that are often underrepresented. I made them outside the focal point of the bra to bring the fact that there are more gender identities and sexual orientations that deserve to be recognized.
